Author Visit: Skyla …
Author Visit: Skyla Arndt with Q&A and Book Signing!
September 9, 2023 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Ishpeming Carnegie Library, 317 N Main St, Ishpeming, MI 49849, USA
Debut young adult author Skyla Arndt will be visiting our library! Join us on Saturday, September 9th at 12pm as Skyla will be reading from her debut novel, "Together We Rot," followed by a Q&A and book signing. We are thrilled that Snowbound Books will also be here selling copies of "Together We Rot." This book is set in the Upper Peninsula, which makes it of special interest to us here! About the book: A teen girl looking for the truth about her missing mother forms a reluctant alliance with her former best friend...in exchange for hiding him from his cult-leading family. Wil Greene’s mom has been missing for over a year, and the police are ready to call the case closed—they claim she skipped town and you can’t find a woman who wants to disappear. But she knows her mom wouldn’t just leave…and she knows the family of her former best friend, Elwood Clarke, has something to do with it. Elwood has been counting down the days until his 18th birthday—in dread. It marks leaving school and joining his pastor father in dedicating his life to their congregation, the Garden of Adam. But when he comes home after one night of after a final goodbye with his friends, already self-flagellating for the sins of drinking and disobeying his father, he discovers his path is not as virtuous as he thought. He’s not his father’s successor, but his sacrifice. For the woods he’s grown up with are thirsty, and must be paid in blood. Now on the run from a family that wants him dead, he turns to the only one who will believe him: Wil. Together, they form a reluctant partnership; she’ll help him hide if he helps her find evidence that his family killed her mother. But in the end they dig up more secrets than they bargained for, unraveling decades of dark cult dealings in their town, led by the Clarke family. And there’s a reason they need Elwood’s blood for their satanic rituals. Something inhuman is growing inside of him. Everywhere he goes, the plants come alive and the forest calls to him, and Wil isn’t sure if she can save the boy she can’t help but love. Snappy dialogue, tension-filled romance, juicy cult dealings, and dark humor galore make this a commercial, bingeable new horror—for anyone who couldn’t watch Yellowjackets fast enough. TOGETHER WE ROT marks Skyla Arndt as a talented debut to watch. Author Bio: Skyla Arndt has always loved the creepy, crawly side of life. When she was younger, she thought that love might translate to hunting Bigfoot, but luckily for him, writing proved easier. Together We Rot is her debut novel. Connect with her at arndtskyla.com or @arndtskyla on Instagram or Twitter. (Howling at the moon works, too.)

Great Lakes Great Bo…
Great Lakes Great Books Club: Grades 4-5
September 14, 2023 6:00 pm - 6:45 pm
Ishpeming Carnegie Library, 317 N Main St, Ishpeming, MI 49849, USA
We're reading our way through the nominees for grades 4-5 of the Great Lakes Great Books Award this year! Join us each month as we read a nominated title, followed by an end of the year vote for your favorite! GLGB is a youth-voted award facilitated by the Michigan Reading Association.
We'll meet Thursday, September 14 at 6:00 in the Ray Leverton Community Room to share our thoughts on the non-fiction picture book for older readers To the Front!: Clara Barton Braves the Battle of Antietam written by Claudia Friddell and illustrated by Christopher Cyr. The meeting will take place only days ahead of the 161st anniversary of the battle (September 17, 1862).
This powerful tribute to Clara Barton and her heroic efforts during the Civil War's Battle of Antietam reveals how she earned the name The Angel of the Battlefield, and shows the beginnings of her journey as one of our country's greatest humanitarians and the founder of the American Red Cross.
During the Civil War, nurse Clara Barton carefully snuck her wagon filled with supplies and provisions onto the field where Antietam, the bloodiest battle the war, was set to take place. On the day of the battle, Clara and her team of helpers sprang into action. She found herself comforting the wounded and dying, cooking meals for soldiers, and providing doctors with innovative sources of light so they could see better. No soldier went unnoticed or unaided by the woman called The Angel of Antietam. Author Claudia Friddell blends her words with Clara Barton's firsthand account to capture the nurse's brave actions while Christopher Cyr's accurate and dramatic illustrations portray one of the most heroic women in history.
Copies will be available for checkout at the library!

Historic Ishpeming: …
Historic Ishpeming: A Photographic Tour with Jack Deo
September 30, 2023 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Ishpeming Carnegie Library, 317 N Main St, Ishpeming, MI 49849, USA
The Association of Friends of the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library is pleased to announce its Fall Lyceum. Please join us for "Historic Ishpeming: A Photographic Tour" with local photographer, Jack Deo! This program will take place in the Children's Room of the ICPL on Saturday, September 30 at 1:30 p.m.
An award-winning photographer since 1969, Deo's historical photographic collection began with the acquisition of the original negatives from the famous Childs Art Gallery of Ishpeming. This studio was founded in the 1860s by Brainard F. Childs, the premier photo artist of the Upper Peninsula. His stereoscopic series, The Gems of Lake Superior, captured the beauty and history of the Lake Superior Region. For three generations this historic studio captured every aspect of life in the North country.
Light refreshments will be served after the program in the Ray Leverton Community Room.
